As the Founder of this Nonprofit, Still Rising Inc., last week marked an incredible milestone in my life—a full-circle moment that filled me with profound inspiration and deep gratitude! I had the amazing opportunity to tour Crittenton of North Carolina, a place that truly holds a special significance in my heart and in the hearts of many others. Once known as Florence Crittenton, A Home for Unwed Mothers, this remarkable organization has evolved over the years to become a beacon of hope and support for women and children in need. The mission of Crittenton is not just to provide temporary shelter but to empower women and children through a comprehensive approach that includes education, health services, residential care, and a wide array of supportive services designed to foster independence and self-sufficiency.
During my visit, I was struck by the warmth and dedication of the staff who work tirelessly to create an environment where women can thrive. Each program offered is tailored to meet the unique needs of the individuals they serve, ensuring that every woman receives personalized attention and support. The educational programs focus on equipping women with the skills they need to pursue career opportunities, while health services address both physical and mental well-being, recognizing that holistic health is crucial for personal development.
Reflecting on my experience, I realized that this visit was not just about witnessing the organization's impact but also about reconnecting with a mission that resonates deeply with my own values. It served as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and the transformative power of education and support. I left Crittenton of North Carolina not only inspired but also motivated to contribute in any way I can to help further their mission and support the incredible women and children they serve.
A Personal Journey
Many of you might not be aware that I was a teenage mom. Twenty-six years ago, I was living at Florence Crittenton, then situated at 1300 Blythe Blvd., Charlotte, NC. It was there that I gave birth to my first daughter, Ayona Shantel, at Carolinas Medical Center - Hospital in Charlotte, NC. At the time, I was still a child myself, a teenager feeling frightened and bewildered by the significant changes in my life. Florence Crittenton became my refuge—a supportive environment where I learned crucial life skills and how to navigate the world as a young mother.
The friendships I built with the other girls became a supportive family during those challenging times. The love, encouragement, and values I gained at Crittenton laid a strong foundation for my future. This support inspired me to launch my own nonprofit in 2020. Still Rising Nonprofit Organization is committed to preventing teenage pregnancy and empowering women of all ages by providing essential resources and unwavering support.
Giving Back
This is a full circle moment for me. I am honored to have the opportunity to reconnect and network with Florence Crittenton and contribute to their mission. My goal in life is to be the person to others that I needed during my own vulnerable years of adolescence—the mentor and supporter for young girls navigating similar challenges that I too once faced. By networking with Crittenton, I am determined to continue making a positive impact in the lives of young women and girls.
Inspiring Change
As I look back on my journey, I'm filled with excitement about the incredible power of community and the vital role of supporting one another! Each one of us holds the potential to spark change, whether it’s through mentorship, advocacy, or simply being there for someone in need. Let’s ignite the future by sharing our stories and providing the support the next generation needs to soar!
In closing, I wholeheartedly encourage you to embrace your own full circle moments. These moments can be dynamic catalysts for change and inspiration, reminding us of our strength and resilience. Together, we can uplift others and create a brighter future for all!
